‘From skinny kid’ to heart throb Continued from page 1 Success on hit TV show Step Dave has not changed Jono Kenyon, though the 25-year-old says it has changed people’s perceptions of him. “I think people sometimes think I’m Dave in real life but really I’m just the same guy I always was.” Kenyon has spent the last four months filming season two of the show in which he plays Dave, a 25-yearold who falls in love with 40-year-old Karla and then has to navigate his way through a myriad of challenges their age gap throws at them. “The success of the show is that it’s relatable to real life,” he says. “You know someone who is in a similar situation.” A “skinny, lanky kid” at Marlborough Boys’ College, Kenyon freely admits some things needed to change for him to get his big break. “I realised that being a tall, skinny guy wasn’t exactly leading man material so I had to hit the gym and really

dedicate myself to becoming the type of actor I wanted to become. Prior to getting the role Kenyon says the market for Kiwi acting gigs was over saturated. “There are plenty of people out there who think they’re actors. “I’d go several months at

a time without an audition, there were so many of us and so few jobs going.” Rather than get disheartened or heap pressure on himself, Jono “stayed the course” as he likes to put it. “You have to be happy with yourself as a person outside of your profession and that keeps you pretty relaxed

about what might or might not happen with an audition. The life lessons he learnt at MBC also still play a part in who he has become. “I remember being overlooked for parts in school plays because I couldn’t sing very well so I just decided to write my own musical and cast myself in the lead.

“Those days taught me that you have to be true to yourself but also you have to make things happen. “Too often as Kiwis we are prepared to sit back and accept what other people have for us instead of trying to make the most of our own opportunities. As for season two of Step Dave, which is likely to debut later this year, Jono says expect things to be more intense. “The first season was about establishing the characters and the relationship but this season the stakes are raised. “Yes, the relationship is sound and we know that but there’s so much more on the line for Dave. Jono says there are similarities between him and his on-screen personas. “I think every actor needs to bring a bit of themselves to each role and like me Dave is a pretty down to earth guy but I’m a bit more earnest than he is. I think Dave likes to jump into things without thinking.

Auction sign weighing 60kg stolen By Jacob Page Marlborough Auctions owner John Firks is running out of patience after a house auction sign weighing 60kg was stolen from outside a house on McLaughlin Street over the weekend. Marlborough Auctions is doing the auctioneering for the private sale but John is startled a second sign has been taken after it had only been up

a week. “The first sign was quite a generic sign but when that was taken we put up this one. “It had two pegs in the ground, a wooden frame and an aluminum base. “It also had two waratahs so someone has had to make a real effort to get it out of the ground.

John says for the sign to be moved, it would need a trailer or pickup truck. “Obviously someone or somebody doesn’t want it there or doesn’t want it to be sold. “We are just advertising the auction, we aren’t the agents, we are just opening the place up for people to look at because the owners are in Nelson.” John says it had been a strange

introduction to real estate for his company and he was going to take the matter to police. He says there is nothing out of the ordinary that would make the sign worth stealing so he is at a loss to explain why it has been taken “This is a first for us; maybe we’ll look at microchipping them next time just to be safe.

Fire burns close to large February blaze By Jacob Page Fire fighters spent most of Monday afternoon battling a blaze at a skid site near Onamalutu in Marlborough. Two helicopters with monsoon buckets and three tankers were needed to bring the blaze under control after it started just after midday. There were at least 25 fire fighters helping to put out the fire. The fire was 10km from a massive blaze that ripped through 600 hectares of pine forest in February. Marlborough Kaikoura principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara says the fire was probably started by spontaneous combustion. He said while it took “most of the afternoon to contain, it did not threaten to become out of control once fire fighters got to work. Heavy machinery was capping the skid site by putting soil over the embers. Crews stayed with the fire overnight which is still smouldering but under control. Richard says a concoction of higher than usual autumn temperatures, strong winds and ironically, rain, helped spark the fire. “We’ve been battling these sorts of fires for the past 18 months.

The drop in centre opens a Koha Cafe each lunch time and often has free food and produce like eggs and fejoas to give away to those in need. “While the rain is usually welcome, it’s fair to say that it probably helped in the decomposition phase of this fire and counted against us.” Richard says while the fire never got out of control, precautions were taken and that piece of land would be monitored by thermal sensors

for the foreseeable future. No cause has been confirmed yet for the February fire and it is understood unless new information comes to light it is unlikely the cause will ever be known. An initial investigation proved inconclusive.

Water and library projects dominate submissions by Jacob Page Water supply and library projects are key subjects for LTP submissions. More than 300 submissions have been received for the MDC's Long Term Plam. Many of those came in the last week despite councillors making a concerted effort to encourage the public to send in feedback on the Council’s spending programme, particularly the new

projects which have been put forward. Mayor Alistair Sowman says the response – an increase on the number who spoke out on last year’s Annual Plan - shows that a good cross-section of the public will speak up if given a specific opportunity to do so. That feedback helped clarify the issues, he said. “Councillors do take a great deal of notice of the content of

submissions and there’s no point in grumbling about how your rates are spent if you haven’t told us what you want,” said Mr Sowman. A large percentage of the written submissions relate to the provision of fresh water in Havelock, Renwick, and Seddon, as well as the riverside precinct project for a community hub building to house Blenheim’s library and Millennium Art Gallery and a

new library and council hub in Picton. Those who wish to speak directly to councillors on their submission will be able to do so from Tuesday 2 June to Thursday 4 June. Submissions hearings are open to the public. Council makes its final decisions on all submissions on June 8 and then adopts the Long Term Plan 2015-2025 on June 25.

Wairau Hospital phone outage A software outage meant all phones were down at Wairau Hospital on Friday. The issue was resolved by Saturday morning. A spokeswoman says all phone lines for Wairau Hospital were again operational after the successful installation of the new PABX system controller. NMDHB chief executive Chris Fleming thanked those involved in resolving the issue. “I want to acknowledge the hard work of many of our staff from the IT Team, to our clinical teams and managers in both Wairau and Nelson hospitals. Everyone involved in this response worked together and it is a great example of how we work as one service between two sites. I extend my thanks and gratitude for their collaboration and a fine result.”

Dashwood project complete by Jacob Page One of the largest roading projects undertaken in Marlborough has been completed. The $6.8 million Dashwood Overbridge realignment, on State highway 1, has taken a year and half to complete and is second only in size to the Awatere Bridge replacement, which was constructed in 2007. Red Cross celebrate 100 years By Adam Poulopoulos The New Zealand Red Cross celebrates 100 years in existence this year, and a plaque and tree were planted by the Taylor River on Friday to celebrate. Mayor Alistair Sowman and Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors were involved in organising the ceremony. They can now be seen near the carpark at the Taylor River end of Monro Street. Sowman says although the organisation began a century ago, it still remains relevant today. “We just need to think back to the recent events in Nepal and Vanuatu and all those disasters where Red Cross plays a major part helping. “While it’s made 100 years I dare say in another 100 years there’ll be another group of people acknowledging 200 years.”

This time it is Mayor Sowman who is acting as Marlborough’s own Sheriff of Nottingham. It is quite clear from the Long Term Plan Consultation Document that the rate-payers of Marlborough are subsidising the rich landowners through the Developments Contributions policy. For many years the property developers of the region have persuaded the council that

they cannot afford to pay the full costs of providing infrastructure to their developments. They have needed rate payers money to help pay for the roads, sewers and water pipes of their sub-divisions. As a consequence every ratepayer in Marlborough – labourer, cleaner, pensioner, single parent, café waitress – have been subsidising the speculative developments of some of the region’s wealthiest landowners. The Council Plan proposes to reduce the subsidy in the future but is still willing to contribute several thousand dollars per section of our money to help the ‘poor’

developers to line their pockets. Fortunately, we have an opportunity to prevent this annual back-door tax. We don’t have to tie our submission to the shaft of an arrow and fire it at the door of Council offices. All we have to do is post a letter or use the submission form before May 7. There are plenty of worthy schemes in the Consultation Document that require Council expenditure to benefit the local community – lining the pockets of the wealthy is not one of them. R Locksleigh

A question of councillors Deer on Arapawa Dear Ed Is the Marlborough District Council mainly made up of failed business people? The way they run the council affairs - on behalf of ratepayers - provokes the question. Why pay $300,000 for a bus shelter the equivalent price of a 4 bedroom house, taps, showers and all gizmos? Why did the Picton bus shelter cost $120,000 when you can build a kit-set garage for a fraction of $120,000?

Why would you build a theatre and car park building with big overrun of costs? Yet to be revealed? Why would you not lobby for a bypass when many (most) see it as much needed. The list goes on. Back in the day Queen Charlotte College celebrates 50 years this year, and founding pupil and current relief teacher Beryl Bowers has a stronger association with the school than most. She spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about the college’s development and her affinity with Picton. Beryl Bowers lives and breathes Picton. A fourth-generation “Pictonite” born in Picton Hospital, Beryl attended Picton School until moving to Queen Charlotte College as one of the school’s first pupils. The school was formed in the 1960s after trains taking pupils from Picton to schools in Blenheim became more and more delayed. “Some days it couldn’t get over the Elevation, and some of the kids did some naughty things to the tracks on the Elevation too,” Beryl says. “The parents got concerned. They thought they would sort out a bus, but in the end they ended up sorting a college for Picton.” Beryl remembers arriving at the school as a Form 2 (Year 8) pupil for the first time in 1965. “We didn’t have to get up an hour early to catch the train and it was a very new school. I remember meeting all these new people I’d never associated with. “The bell went for morning tea and the teachers thought we would go and play on the field, but we all ran up into the trees. “The bell went and we got called into a special assembly to be told that area was out of bounds.” The school has changed markedly since then. The entrance Beryl and her classmates walked through is in the same place now, but there were only a handful of buildings constructed. “While we were there, there were builders and tradesmen walking around the whole time,” Beryl says. She also remembers the playing fields were always wet through lack of drainage, and the school used to run its cross-country on a swamp to the side of the school, where houses have since been built. The school started with about 150 Form 1 and 2 pupils. Now, the school has about 400 pupils from Year 7-13. After leaving school Beryl went to train as a Karitane Nurse in Wellington, and spent a stint in Australia. Since then she has resided in Picton, where she met husband Cliff. After several administration jobs in automotive businesses Beryl says she was inspired to get her teaching qualifications by her two daughters. “It’s neat to see kids progress and learn, and it’s really important to be a part of that.” She has been a relief teacher at QCC for the past decade, even accompanying school groups overseas in the past. “I tell a lot of the students I came here and some of them get quite interested in it. It’s quite cool being there,” she says. Outside of the classroom Beryl is heavily involved in Picton life. She and Cliff ran the Picton Volunteer Ambulance Service for 33 and a half years, and have been organising

the Picton Maritime Festival for the last 10. “I said to Cliff I wanted to do something to showcase our town,” she says. “The people in Picton – it’s their festival.” She says her feelings for Picton were summed up by QCC students on the way back from overseas.

“We were flying in from Christchurch and the kids were saying ‘the mountains are green.’ “It’s stunning. The harbour is a lovely wee place, and everyone gets behind you and helps out.” The Queen Charlotte College 50th Anniversary Reunion will be held from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1.

What has been your biggest achievement? Opening my own business, which is something that I have wanted to do for many years. Working with people and making a big difference to their quality of life. I was involved in the Newborn Hearing Screening training programme, and have lectured at the University of Canterbury and I have worked for a hearing aid manufacturer gaining a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of hearing aids. How do you define success? Success is being able to do what you love to do and getting paid to do it! I am one of the fortunate ones to have found success by that definition. What do you do in your down time? I love doing anything outdoors – walking, travelling, snowboarding (mostly for the scenery), and especially visiting wineries! Chess tournament About 50 chess players from five Marlborough schools faced off on Friday for the chance to compete nationally in Auckland in October. The Blenheim Zone tournament was held at Richmond View School, and also featured pupils from Bohally Intermediate, Fairhall School, Linkwater School and Marlborough Boys’ College. The top three individual players and the best-placed female from Friday’s tournament qualify to compete at the Champions Trophy on October 3, while the top three school teams in each of the junior, intermediate and senior divisions compete in the Chess Power National Finals the next day. The junior tournamentt is from Year 1-6, the intermediate grade includes Year 7 and 8 and the senior grade is for college players. Both tournaments are held in Auckland and feature players from around the country. Competitors played seven rounds of matches altogether.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Blenheim Probus Club is continuing to blossom, if their latest project is anything to go by. The club has had its own garden planted at the Parker Street end of Pollard Park, and it will remain there until after Garden Marlborough in November. The garden comprises about 5000 plants, and planting by the Marlborough District Council’s Parks and Reserves team began recently. The yellow-flowering Calendula plants will spell out ‘Probus’ and depict the club’s symbol, while the blue Myosotis plants will flower around the outside. The plants are likely to bloom properly in August or September, but with sunny conditions the process may begin next month. Club committee member Maureen Stevens says she saw council advertising for community groups to have their design planted about three years ago. She says it is a good way to let people know the club is still alive and well and searching for new members. The Probus garden replaced an Anzac garden, which was removed after the recent services.

The store offered to supply and install it free of charge. Craig Stephens and Daniel van Greeven Broek of Bunnings Warehouse arrived on Monday to put it together in one of the garden areas beside the dementia unit. While they were reluctant to take any credit, they did say Bunnings Warehouse liked to show support to the community through a

variety of projects. Ross says he was hugely grateful to Bunnings Warehouse for their generosity, and says the shed will be enjoyed by the residents. “Everyone has a garden shed so we really wanted to give our dementia unit residents another piece of ‘normality’, where they can go and sit, maybe build something or plant some flowers. “It just gives them some more opportunities, and already some of the residents are excited about what has been going on today,” he says. Floral demonstration this weekend Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A very special floral event will be held in Renwick this Saturday - the annual Area Day hosted by the Marlborough Floral Art Group. Every four years this event is held in Marlborough, and this year it will be at the Renwick Community Memorial Hall. The theme will be ‘Seasons of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness’, so it will be likely that floral arrangements will feature nuts, fruits and autumn leaves, says group president Lorraine Sutherland. During the day there will be an opportunity for the public to go

along and view the demonstrations from 1pm. Entry costs $10 per person which will include afternoon tea. The Marlborough Floral Art Group is celebrating its 50th year and has around 35 members, although anyone wanting to join are warmly welcomed. The group meets monthly and carries out a number of floral demonstrations within the community, with the most recent being the Anzac Day Show at the Clubs of Marlborough. Micah shows class to win key race By Jacob Page Timaru’s Micah McGoldrick was the winner of the main race of the Peter Brown Memorial Motocross event at the Wadsworth Property on Northbank Road on Sunday. Michah moved from Amberley to Timaru so he could train and race at Pleasant Point and push his chances of national exposure. The choice is clearly paying off. Marlborough Motorcycle Club president, Mike Holland says 100 riders took part in the event, with 50 seniors, more than 35 juniors and 13 minis all testing their abilities. Marlborough riders also impressed with George Holland finishing first in the enduro class while Josh Orchard was second. Mike says the track performed really well. “The moisture in the track was perfect, there was hardly any dust and only one injury for the weekend which is good.
